The bulb type should be listed in your owner's manual (you did keep it, didn't you?)
Volvos normally use halogen bulbs which must be handled very carefully. Wear clean rubber or cloth gloves since any skin oil that gets on the bulb glass can cause it to shatter when it reaches operating temperature.
Open the hood/bonnet and look in each front corner of the engine compartment. There should be a plastic holder for the bulb, accessible from the rear of the lamp cover. Pull off the power connector and release the metal spring that holds the bulb in place. Carefully remove the old bulb and set it aside somewhere safe so it won't fall and shatter. Take the new bulb (while you're wearing those gloves, of course) and put it into the holder. There should be little detents that align it correctly in the holder. Compress the metal spring and put it into place, then reinstall the power connector.
Aside from the fact that halogen bulbs are very finicky about being handled, the job is actually pretty easy.
There are two holes in the surround in front of the cluster. Push a small screwdriver very hard into a slot, whilst pulling on the shaft of the screwdriver. This will pop the surround out on one side, then do the other.
Once the surround is off, take off 4 torx screws, and remove. Be careful to label connections before taking them off!
you have to lift the bonnet and at the back of the sidelight inside the bay is a plastic catch you push it down and the sidelight pulls out forwards unplug it and then take out the grill on the sides of the space behind the grill take off the fibre panels held on by screws you will see there are 2 bolts in there holding the headlight on and one the end where the flasher came off take em out if you have headlight wipers you will have to get underneath and take the motor off first

Remove the instrument cluster then replace the bulbs. = =
remove dashboard and replace 2 bulbs behind it
you don't! remove bezel for gauges, remove four screws for gauge assembly, pull forward and tilt, replace the four bulbs.
You have to remove the dashboard, then remove the instrument cluster. On the back of the cluster, you'll find that you can unscrew the bulbs from the back and replace them. I've done it myself on my own 99 Sunfire --- CanadianCynosure
Remove the cover around the controls and you will see the bulbs inside the climate control unit. It just pulls off.
Bad light bulbs.... Replace them...
This is very hard, you will need a repair book. the plastic parts are press tabs and will probably break off when you try to remove them.
cannot get fingers or hands in to remove replace headlight bulbs do i need to remove other parts to do this on a 1998 Honda civic?
There are 3 phillips head screws attatching each clear lens to it's mounting. Remove all 3 and the bulbs will be there. You will need orange replacement bulbs.
It's a real pain to replace! The bulbs can be purchased at just about any auto parts store, but you have to completely remove the dash in order to access and replace the bulbs. It's a common problem (and a terrible design...)
