Bypass the cooling system and discard altogether the heater matrix if you use the car below Rome.
remove Radio ,remove lower dash panel complete with glove box. remove heater box.
The heater matrix can be accessed from the front passenger side. Remove the glove box and the flow end return pipes for the heater matrix can be seen. You will need a fairly long T20. Torx driver.
Remove dash, centre console, heater box and you'll find it in there
Remove the wiring harness from the back of your heater fan motor. Remove the heater fan motor retaining bolts. Remove the fan from the front of the heater motor. Reverse the process to install your new heater motor.
There is no heater control valve fitted on a Ford Escort. The heater matrix is directly connected to the engine's cooling system. To reach the heater matrix, you should remove all the facia unfortunately... :(
Remove centre consul. Drain cooling system. Remove 2 heater pipes on bulk head under bonnet. Remove matrix cover in car under dash. Pull matrix out. This was on a 2002 model. As they say in the haynes manual..do in reverse to refit !
i think you just take em off lisa.

Remove the water deflector,(big plastic moulding over the pollen filter)then the filter itself. You should now be able to see where the wiring loom fastens to the heater motor box.Disconnect this and the resistor is left on the box.Unclip and remove, ensure the new one is fully clipped in.Refit filter and cover.
This is a common complaint with mk2 Golfs, most of which were fitted with a heater matrix bypass valves to prevent the heater matrix from bursting under certain conditions. These bypass valves can fail, cutting off supply to the heater matrix resulting in no heat. Either replace the valves or remove them and fit a heater matrix from a mk3 Golf. These are stronger units and don't require bypass valves.
Firsly remove the centre console, once removed the matrix is accessible under dash. Remove the 6 or 8 , 5.5mm bolts and 6 clips and then remove the cover, feel towards the front of the matrix (towards bulkhead ) and then remove the plastic clips if delphi type or metal ones on behr type, one on each pipe and then remove the matrix.
You have to pull out the dashboard, and everything in it. Then you have to remove the heaterboxes in elements starting with blowermotor and working your way in. be very carefull not to break it, the plastics are not that strong. There is a retainingplate in the enginebay that holds on to the top of the hosemounting for the heater matrix. Be sure to get out all bolts before trying to remove the heaterboxes, and mark all wires before stripping them. it´s a long process but it can be done in you own garage, if you have the patience for it.
