Yes, I have it done on mine. The MK3 2.0 gearbox fails when it gets to high mileage. The Mk2 1.8 gearbox is bulletproof.

No they fit different, although mk2 and mk3 and some mk4 polo gearboxes will fit. You want an 8P gearbox.

Depend on what kind of a gearbox it is. But normal 5 speed or 4 speed is like this. You need to loosen the clutch wire first. Then remove the bolts for the driveshafts if you what them out with..its easier that way:) Then loosen the bolts going thru the starter. And then the bolts around the gearbox housing..should be 3-4 18-19mm bolts. Then a few smaller bolts i between the big once. There is also a metal arm from the gearbox where the negative from the battery are fixed. There should 2pcs 13mm bolts...you should really also search for vw golf mk2 gearbox change on youtube if you what a more complex answer.

You remove the horn button if its in the middle.. Or just remove the plastic in the middle of the steeringwheel. Then take a 24mm i think and unscrew the big nut. Then remove the wheel.
First you remove the steeringwheel...then you apply the boss with the big nut and washer. Done
