on a golf, depending on the model, its not a hard job at all.. just make sure you do it right and make sure everything is torqued to the right spec.my car, a 94 golf GL 2.0L gas automatic, was a bit of a chore because you have to remove a motor mount to do it. the first thing you can do to save yourself alot of hassle and cursing is remove the battery and battery tray. if you find this hard to do then stop now and take your car to a garage.after you've removed the tray, use a jack and locate the lift arm just between the oil pan and the tranny (theres an obvious flat spot) just lift the engine enough to release tension on the motor mount (maybe 4-5 inches high: to account for suspension travel too).step 1: disconnect all wiring from the starter motorstep 2: remove the bolt through the top of the motor mount at the front of the engine. the engine wont move.. at least it shouldn't yet.step 3: remove the bolt through the power steering line mount clipstep 4: remove the rest of the bolts holding the starter motor in placestep 5: extract the starter motor by pulling it straight out of the transmission.step 6: replace starter in the exact opposite way you removed it.be sure to torque the motor mount bolt to factory spec (check your manual)step 7: lower the lift jack under the carand that should be all.. its really not a difficult job, on a difficulty scale, maybe a 4/10.hope this helped... - Jeff

To the left of the hazard switch (if like my mk 4) you have 2 x switch socket covers (black plastic covers). Pop off with a small screwdriver the cover nearest to hazard switch, then you can get your fingers in behind hazard switch body and easily pop it out (no damage or force necessary). Once the hazard switch is proud of the dashboard the hazard switch is removed by simply uncliping it from connector block.

The 97 usually has a clutch cable that is self-adjusting. This cable usually gets replaced when a new clutch is installed, as it is difficult to un-adjust it once it adjusts for clutch wear.
Some enthusiasts fit their car with the old-style manual adjusting clutch cable, in a belief that is helps clutch feel and prolongs clutch life.
The clutch cable itself is between the motor and the battery, a big black thing that hooks into the transmission's front clutch release lever. IF you have a friend push the clutch in and out, you can easily see it operate if you're looking under the hood.

Once coolant starts to expand and spill out, replace cap. Watch temperature gauge to esure the problem has been rectified. You may have to repeat this procedure.

Timing belt manufacturers recommend replacing timing belts every 60,000 miles. In the case of a volkswagon I would never exceed that milage. The water pumps on volkswagon engines have plastic impellars, and they are very prone to failure. I have seen them fail at 50,000 miles on several occasions. The water pump is driven by the timing belt so both should be changed at the same time. EVERY TIME.

here ya go,
You have to press TA & TP together, then the 1000 appears and you enter the code using the 1-4 buttons then press TA & TP again to confirm (it's a BETA 4 radio).
If it is the current Beta proceed as follows: 1. Switch on: Display reads "SAFE" 2. Enter code using button "1" to enter the first digit of code, button "2" to enter the second digit etc. 3. When all 4 digits of the code are correctly display, press either the manual setting rocker (>) or the search (>>) button for more than 2 seconds. Then release. 4. The radio should then play. If it does not, press either the "FM" or "CC" button. Hope this helps.
AnswerI have a 1997 VW Jetta, I had work done on it and the radio went in to SAFE mode. I accidently entered the wrong code 2 or 3 times and now I can't get it back to BETA mode to enter the code I have. What can I do?
AnswerOnce you have your 4 digit code and the radio is set to 1000. You put the code in one at a time until you have entered all of them starting from the first digit 1. My 1998 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition's code is 0986. After I entered the code, I pressed the seek button for at least 2 seconds and the radio immediately began to play.Answer:
If your jetta has SEEK/SCAN and > buttons, press SEEK with the lower >, 1000 appears, enter your code, press SEEK and > again for about 2 seconds..radio will start playing.

Best first step is to purchase an after market repair manual. $20, They have step by step instructions with pictures. I have done this and the bolts holding the pump on, snapped off leaving the broken pieces sticking out of the block. Fortunately, my neighbour has acetylene torches and I was able, after removing coolant in block with shop vac, to heat the area around broken bolts enough to remove them.
OR take it to a shop, get them to give you a price, and let them have headaches.
alright this is relatively simple. and can be done with basic tools
remove the 4 screws holding the pully onto the water pump
then removed the serp belt by loosening the idle pully and then turning the adjustor
there are 4 screws around where the pully was mounted and 2 more that are attached to a bracket that the PS pump attaches to
after you have removed all 6 screws unclamp the hose leading to the firewall from the top of the pump, (follow the metal tube and youll find the hose) and unclamp the lower radiator hose from the pump.
now you just have to snake the pump out and unscrew the metal tube from the top and move it over to the new pump
installation is reverse except put the pully back on the pump before you put the belt back on. after the belt is back on then you have to tighten the bolts on the pully

You need a special tool set. In a pinch you could make one if you had a template for one. Assuming you have the single din deck, you insert the two tools into the thin vertical slots on each side. Its a thin slot about 8mm high and about 2mm wide. Remove the storage bin above then slide in the tool and when it locks, pull gently and it should slide out. I once cut a peice of sheet metal the right size and inserted it, then gently pulled outward with my fingers in the tape deck opening. Do it gently or you can break the faceplate.

A directional indicator is usually an arrow (or a compass rose) printed on a map which indicates the orientation of the map in reference to the cardinals N-S-E-W. North is by far the most common; on a North referenced map, North would be top center (although this is relative to how one holds the map) ;-)

It is below the temperature controls/air con or climate control panel in the centre console.
If you look at the bottom egde of the upright part of the centre console, just above the ashtray, you will see a piece of wood grain or alloy trim (depending on your model) about 1/2" high and about 6" long. This covers the OBD diagnostics port.
Remove this by putting your fingers of one hand underneath and simply slide it back out toward you. Job done, To replace, just locate and push back in....simple as that.
The OBD port is to the RHS of the area which has been uncovered, and is usually a dusky shade of pink/light purple.
Hope this helps?
