User Avatar
Get a manual; they are cheap and you will need it if you are that far into a build. - - - - - If you have a camshaft with a bolt-on gear, one or the other should have come with torque specs. Stock Type 1 cam gears are riveted to the camshaft.

How many VW beetle models are there?

User Avatar
the Beetle is the most-manufactured automobile of a single design platform anywhere in the world. From 1945 onwards the model was internally designated the Volkswagen Type 1, and marketed simply as the "Volkswagen". Later models were designated VW 1200, 1300, 1500, 1302 or 1303, the former three indicating engine displacement and the latter two being derived from the type number and not indicative of engine capacity.

How do you remove the distributor in a 1973 351 Cleveland engine?

User Avatar
Ok, there is a one bolt that holds in the disributor. it will be conected to a crows foot looking clamp. Take the bolt out and on Fords it more of a pain then just Chevy's. Chevy's just twist out while pulling. Fords are the same . but to put it back in you have to bump the motor until it falls in. Kind of a pain to set timming. But usually you hold it where the #1 spark plug is and it will fall into place. It's a two man operation. Infact in super beetles the company were offering 3 types of engines. VW stamped all type 1's and pre '72 type 2's on the right case half just below the generator pedestal. The first and sometimes the second digit/letter denotes the basic engine group. So the best you can do is narrow down the engine to a group. What is the oil capacity for a 1971 super beetle?

User Avatar
2.8 quarts. We usually just add a full 3 quarts. Be sure to clean the filter/screen, and replace all the little gaskets - one per nut (6 total) plus the two big paper gaskets that fit one above and one below the filter/screen. The 6mm bolts are delicate, do not over tighten, or they WILL strip easily. - - - - - The engine holds 2500 ml of oil, or a little over 2.6 quarts. Don't put any more than that in there because the engine has very high startup oil pressure. If you put even a little too much oil in a Bug you will pop the main seal right out of the engine, which causes it to leak. This is why everyone thinks Volkswagens all leak. They don't, unless you make them leak and this is how.
Asked in Oxygen Sensors, VW New Beetle, VW Beetle Type 1

What does it mean when an o2 sensor fault is lean how do you fix it?

User Avatar
The o2 sensor is apparantly picking up a "lean" signal because you have too much air and not enough fuel going through your injectors. Possibly caused by a problem in your "evap" system, or a bad "ecg" sensor. also possibly caused by clogged injectors.

What is the correct way to install a new headliner in a 1974 VW Beetle 111?

User Avatar
Busbones.com has a partial how to do vw headliner install. Last 2 parts unavailable but lots of info. First you have to buy a good quality headliner. A few common handtools will come in handy. at this point you should also order new rubber seals for the front, rear and both quarter windows. The windows have to be removed in order to replace the headliner. The primary tool used will be a short blade putty knife (I used a bench grinder to dull the blade on mine so it would not cut the headliner fabric) which is used to tuck the fabric into the tabs that hold it in. There are steel rods called bows that fit through sleeves sewn into the headliner, these fit into tracks on the sides of the car's roof. The bows create the domed look of the headliner. You can start from the front or the back using clothes pins to hold the headliner in place so you can get things organized. You will have to pull the headliner tight and even so you do not have wrinckles. I used regular contact cement on my headliner and it worked great but you can use other types of adhesive if you want. After getting the headliner stretched front to rear you start on the sides. It is just about impossible to explain how to attache the sides, the best thing to do is to remove a headliner and pay attention to how it was installed. When you start take your time, getting in a hurry will only cause you to lower your quality standards and you will regret it later.

Where is the VIN on a 1974 VW beetle?

User Avatar
1974 VW Beetles don't have VINs, but rather serial numbers. There is a number for the chassis, and one for the engine. DMV wants the chassis number. The engine serial number is stamped into the case, just below the alternator stand. The chassis number is in three places. The easy one is in the lower left corner of the windshield. There's one on the transmission tunnel under the seat, and a third on a data plate in the engine compartment.

67 VW Beetle wont shift into first or second?

User Avatar
The first thing I would do is to replace the shift coupler. You crawl under your car and look at the nose of the transmission, and you'll see the shift rod coming out of it running to the front of the car. If that goes bad--and since it's a 67, it almost certainly is--it can cause this. These are cheap. If that doesn't work, things are no longer cheap because you need the transmission rebuilt by someone who knows how to rebuild this transmission. You can order a rebuilt transmission from aircooled.net or busdepot.com. (Both are very reputable; which you choose depends on where you live. Aircooled.net is in Salt Lake City. Bus Depot is in Pennsylvania. Pick the closest one because these are motor freight items and you pay for that by the mile.) By the time you pay freight and buy all the stuff you need to install a transmission, you're looking at somewhere around $600.

How does the heater work on a 69 vw bug?

User Avatar
It Doesn't :).... because it's been neglected for years. beetle heaters are very good, the demisting isn't. Cool air is drawn into the engine bay by the air-cooling fan. When the heater control flap is pulled (RHS by hand brake) some air flows over fins on the exhaust pipe that are encased in a box. These heat exchangers heat the air as it passes into the cabin. You can control where the air exits via the control on the other side. Down is for front, up for rear. Then you have flaps at the lower vent level. Of course none of this works in your car if you haven't fixed it. work from the back; Check you have a standard exhaust with heat exchangers Check you have good hoses from the fan shroud to the heat exchangers Check your heat exchanger flaps haven't seized shut/open Check you have cables attached between heat exchangers and controls Check all hoses into the cabin are in tact. If you get that far you should have heat to the rear, keep going with the flaps and hoses until it all works. Because it runs of the exhaust pipe you get heat really quickly.

location of engine # on 90 Nissan 300zx the engine number is located under the hood on the passenger side on a label if you are trying to see if you vehicle is turbo or not the engine family letter will be a T for turbo and I forget the exact letter but maybe a D if not (of course there are numbers also in this engine family number but the letter determines turbo or non as long as the hood is original to car and motor) per Nissan dealership I called and asked!!!! Where would the VIN be on 1964 vw?

User Avatar
1964 VWs don't have VIN numbers, they have engine and chassis numbers. The engine number is stamped into the engine case just below the generator stand. The chassis number is in three places. The first is on a data plate somewhere near the spare tire well in front. The second is on a plate in the windshield --it's pretty much straight ahead of your left hand while you're holding the steering wheel. And the third is under the back seat on the tunnel. BTW, do not be alarmed if the number on the transmission tunnel doesn't match the other two numbers; when they were still importing these cars they were common enough that someone who had a rusted-out chassis would go to the junkyard and buy a Bug someone rolled. It's pretty easy to get the body off the chassis, so you'd put your good body on the good chassis, the rolled body on your rusted-out one and have the now-completely-ruined Bug hauled back to the junkyard.
