Take off the wheel, remove the plastic cap if stuck to hub assy, undo the 10mm bolts (Air tools work with vehicle off ground, spanner wont......unless you braace through wheel studs with a big wrench, using a hammer and a worn out flat head scre driver, hammer around the outer hub cap until you have enough room to pry off the cap. Don't bother trying to remove the dust cap.......it's pointless.......undo the Phillips screws holding the multi holed ring in place. Using a circlip removal tool, or a thin pair of pliers, pry off the circlip over the splined end shaft of the CV shaft (Drive shaft)..........this is where I am now, trying to figure out how to get the inner ring assy out without pulling of the wheel hub or removing the CV shaft...........more if I figure it out.........
Sidewinder.........
Well, just a few more notes, my Vitara is a North American Model, which I believe in every other part of the world, the Sidekick that I new and loved, was also called the Vitara. As to my 2001 2 door, forget the bit about hammering off the hubs with a flat head, there is little indentations you can use to pry everything apart........as I could not find anything
that related to "Locking" the hubs inside, I am wondering if it is inside the differential.........Stumped I am.
Ah well, good time to chuck some grease on the cv shaft ends anyway........grrrr.......
Put the transfer case in neutral, the transmission in park, the frt. hubs in free wheeling, and turn the key on the first notch to unlock the steering. I think this is correct but check to make sure. I will not be responsible for any information given on this site, Right or wrong. If you don't have locking hubs and you have automatic hubs you may damage the trans if the frt. hubs lock. If the vehicle moves back any it will lock the auto. hubs. You NEED unlocking (free wheeling hubs) This is for a 4 wheel drive with automatic transmission.
What do you mean by fixed front hubs...?...the hubs should be free wheeling while you have the switches in the centre of the hub turned in one direction...and fixed when you have them turned in the other direction...
No, unless you want to install aftermarket free wheeling hubs on it.
That is just a figure of speech,( automatic hubs) on a 1990 model 4x4. There are no hubs to remove, It has a 1/2 shaft with CV joints-- AXEL SHAFT, And when ingaged in 4-wheel drive it locks the ring and pinion in instead of lock-outs, There is nothing to remove.
The Ranger has remote free-wheeling hubs to disconnect the front wheels from the front axle when 4wd is disengaged, reducing rolling resistance and hence tyre wear and fuel consumption. When you engage 4wd initially (when stationary) the free wheeling hubs engage automatically. Once these are engaged it is possible to shift between 2H and 4H and back when moving (e.g. when going between solid road and snow, since without a centre differential you can't safely drive the Ranger on-road in 4x4). This is why the free-wheeling hubs do not disengage automatically. To disengage them you press the RFW switch. This is the only time this switch does anything. If you drive > 60mph the RFW light will flash to remind you to press the button to disengage the free wheeling hubs.
To remove hubs on an automatic 1996 Ford F150, first remove the silver cap that has 3 Torx screw using a Torx screw driver. Secondly, there is a snap ring inside the next part where those Torx screws came out of; remove it using the correct hub socket. The hubs come right off after removing the ring.
difference between locking and fixed hubs is fixed hubs are driven the whole time this means that the axles and hubs turn as the wheels turn these are engaged at the transmission when needed locking hubs are free wheeling hubs, and when not locked the wheels will turn but the axles are not turning some have a switch inside cab to lock them, some you have to get out of vehicle and manuelly lock the hub at the hub these hubs when unlocked will not drive when transmission is engaged,
Engages automatic locking hubs on for wheels drives with automatic hubs.
put it in 4x4, and it does it for you. or install locking hubs for 50 bucks.
Manually turn front free wheeling hubs to lock (front wheels) Place $wd gear stick to 4H or 4L - $wd light will come on on dash
automatic loking hubs? this happing to me also went to manuale loking hubs no more popping!! automatic loking hubs? this happing to me also went to manuale loking hubs no more popping!!
are you sure you have the hubs locked in? if automatic hubs then it probably needs manual hubs put in. You have to be stopped and transmission in neutral
