Is in an E30 or an E36 as they were both in production that year. If it's an E36, then its in the O/S centre console, if you take off the panel below the steering wheel (if UK RHD model) and then you can unclip one of the blower ducts to gain access to a rectanguylar access panel with a twisty sort of lock in the middle of it. The cabin filter can then be withdrawn. It is in folding sections so it can be manouvered in and out easier. Not sure about an E30, may be the same.
