No cabin air filter is factory-equipped on first-generation Fusions.
Remove the air filter housing cover. The air filter will lift out. Drop the new air filter into the housing and replace the cover.
Changing the air filter element • 2.3L I4 engine • 3.0L DOHC V6 Duratec engine 1. Release the clamps that secure the air filter housing cover. 2. Carefully separate the two halves of the air filter housing. 3. Remove the air filter element from the air filter housing.4. Wipe the air filter housing and cover clean to remove any dirt or debris and to ensure good sealing. 5. Install a new air filter element. Be careful not to crimp the filter element edges between the air filter housing and cover. This could cause filter damage and allow unfiltered air to enter the engine if not properly seated. 6. Replace the air filter housing cover and secure the clamps.
Close, but no cigar... It is UNDER the air filter. Remove the air filter box from your engine side wall. It is right underneath that.
You will find it under the air filter (easy to remove filter btw). AB

On the 2001 it is located on the right side under the wiper. Open hood, remove the windshield cowl and the air filter is there.
How is the plastic air horn attached to the air box? On checking the air filter I found plastic horn laying in the bottom of the air box.
Go to Advance Auto Parts and ask for a Purolator cabin filter for your Ford. If it came equipped with one that will tell you. Purolator Cabin filters come with complete instructions on how to replace it.
