There are two screws holding the light casing in place. On the passenger side, these screws are forward facing and easy to spot after you open the back door. On the drivers side, the screws are on the inside of the panel and can be accessed once the door is open with a screw driver. The screws require star bits. Remove the two screws and then pull straight out - hard. The light casing is held in place with a couple of ball and socket joints. The first time you remove the casing, it is very difficult to pull the casing off. If you can get a second person to hit the side of the light casing with the palm of their hand or their fist while you pull on the light casing, that helps a lot. Once you pull off the casing, you will be able to see where the bulbs are located and can change them.
Remove the plastic cover with two clips on the back, "kind of a pain" then remove the two screws on either side of the light casing then just slide the casing out.
Trunk open, remove the 4 wing nuts on the casing. The casing will pull off from the outside. The bulbs are in there.
Should be the same as the '96. From inside the trunk there are 3 maybe 4 wing nuts on the inside of the light casing. Remove them and the whole light casing comes off from the outside. There are the bulbs.
