To remove the factory stereo on 1996 dodge ram 1500 you need to pop the hood on the Ram and remove the ashtray. Slide the stereo out of the dash and unplug the cables from the back of the stereo.
The stereo can be removed by first removing the dash cover. On the bottom side of the cover that is in front of the stereo are two screws. Remove them, and then use two large, flat screwdrivers (wrapped in a soft cloth to protect the dash) to carefully pry off the cover.

there will be roughly 4 screws on the dash, 2 by the guage window and 2 by the radio/ heat controls. after removing pop out the dash. you will have to lower the steering collum, after the dash is off you have 4 screws holding the stereo in place.
The molding around the dash area where the stereo has several hidden screws up under the cross pieces. Remove those and it should pop off. From there the stereo has 4 screws that hold it in place.
To remove the dash you simply use a thin tool and insert it between the dash where the stereo is mounted and the rest of the dash. this will take off the entire section with the AC vents, the AC controls, the clock and the stereo. After you get a portion of it off, gently pull the rest of the dash off. The dash is held to the rest of the dash by spring loaded clips, so if you are careful you won't break anything.
No you don't have to remove the dash, there are four little holes on the face of the factory stereo which require a removal tool this tool can be purchased at the Ford dealer for a resonable price, after you insert the tools (one on each side) than you will be able to pull the stereo out.
