You have to Jack up the car, and reach above the rear end , remove the 2 clips holding the fuel lines and give them a slight twist and pull. This will remove the hoses. Then you will have to remove the hoses and straps and wiring in the trunk, in order to remove the tank.

i have a 1991 sovereign xj6 and i have the same problem, BUT the gauge would show correct levels when accelerating
I found that if you drop the hole engine and cradle from the bottom of the car it is much easier

Remove the fan shroud remove the radiator remove the fan there is a fan in front of the radiator fan, loosen the sway bar on that and lower it a little so you can remove that belt loosen the alternator sway bar belt should be loose... replace belt reverse to put everything back you will need a ratchet and 10mm socket keep track of your bolts.
