I have a 1979 280zx also and just changed it it is located near the gas tank under the car in the passenger side
inside the tank
My 1980 280ZX GL model still gets 25mpg after 250,000 miles. A tank of gas (20 gallons) should get you 500 miles. It's a manual 5-speed transmission.
It is outside of the fuel tank close to the rear passenger wheel. Can't miss the big silver/chrome tubular device sticking out with lines and wires coming off it.
take off rear wheel it is by gas tank not in tank
Remove the filler neck hose from the tank and insert a syphon hose into the tank.
10 gal i have a 1977 datsun 280z 2+2 and at $3.21 a gal it takes 40 from empty

On my pickup it seems like it is a 12 gallon gas tank
get the tank as empty as you can, if you can get the car on jacks so you can lower the tank with a floor jack you will place under it. remove three screws at the filler neck, remove gas inlet/outlet and the gas gauge wires then unbolt the two straps holding it to the car and as you let the jack down slowly watch for the three hoses you have to remove (at least on my 73 it was this way) installation is reverse. but hook the hardest hoses to reach first. its really not hard
