The instruction is provided in the Bently repair manual. I have removed for a 1985 Jetta diesel as well as earlier diesels. It is not a difficult proceure. You need to pull out heater, radio knobs and the radio. Need to remover screws and pull out various switches and losed the speedo cable, etc. If I can do it, you surely can do it. First, disconnect the battery ground, and place the steering wheel in the lowest position. Remove the plastic trim on the left side of the light switch, then remove the light switch by pushing the plastic catch to the left of the switch. Remove the trim to the right of the cluster, exposing two screws that are also to be removed. Remove the screws securing the instrument cluster, then tilt the cluster downward to disconnect the electrical plugs. The cluster can now be easily removed by pulling it directly out of the opening.

YOU HAVE A BAD INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, i OWN AND OPERATE A REPAIR FACILITY THAT SERVICES A LOT OF VW`S AND THIS IS AN INHERENT TRAIT. Answer2: I have a 1997 Jetta TD. The cluster went down also. For me I had to resolder each pin out of the 20 or 24 pin connector on the Electronic board of the cluster. Hope it can help.
One can find information on a Volkswagen Jetta diesel on various websites like VW and Edmunds. Both websites offer a great amount of information and reviews on a Volkswagen Jetta diesel, and can be read for free.
