The stock air box in a Subaru Forester contains the air filter. To reveal the air filter remove all the screws mounting it to the engine. Proceed to open the air box and replace the air filter. Reinstall the air box to the car.

there is definitley a 1997 model forester - i have one myself!!! im about to rembove my stereo aswell so if i find anything out il let you know..... do you know the factory speaker sizes by any chance?
Go to your local auto parts store and get the Haynes manual (or similar) for your Forester. Cost about $20. Read and see if you feel that your skills are up to doing the procedure. Otherwise, leave this to a professional. --Ken
You'll need to remove the driveshafts, even if it has a manual transmission. The transfer case is permanently engaged, and cannot be placed into neutral.
