Remove the door panels
I too was looking for an answer to this question. I found an answer on this forum under 2002 Chevy Tahoe. These panels should be similar if not the same. Hope this helps.
You need a set of Torx
To remove the rear speaker panels in a 2002 Volkswagen, start by carefully prying off any plastic covers or trim pieces surrounding the panels. Use a trim removal tool or flathead screwdriver to avoid damaging the interior. Once exposed, unscrew any screws holding the speaker panels in place, then gently pull the panels away from the door, disconnecting any wiring as needed. Always consult your vehicle's manual for specific instructions and precautions.
Check out this website*** http://www.a1electric.com/grandam.htm *** It shows how to remove the panels on a 2002 model. It might be similar.
Go to Neons.org, 2nd Gen link. You will find the information there.
I guess you are having a hard time with the REAR door panels. Simply remove the handle inserts that look look like a flat plastic cup, pull the out-up torwards you. After you remove the screws pull the door and the plugs will come out.
Try either in rear trunk compartment left side or in one of the kick panels
they are hinges, just unhinge them
