Take a large flat blade screwdriver and drive it into the center of the casting plug. Pry the old plug out. Now clean the area thoroughly with a wire brush. Do not use a chisel. Insert the new casting plug into the hole and sharply hit it dead center with a round 3/4 " punch or similar tool. Drive it home until it seals. The center will be concave if done correctly.
Take care that the plug does not drop out of site down between the block water jacket (where it was embedded) and the cylinder water jacket wall. Rotating the plug as it is driven will cause it to expose an edge that can be grabbed with (preferably) a needle nosed vise grips and retracted w/o incident.

Freeze plugs can split or be pushed out of place if the engine freezes up. The plugs slide tightly, or plug, into place.
The engine will leak out coolant/antifreeze from the freeze plug area. Freeze plugs can be replaced, it may take a lot of work to replace one but they are made to be replaceable. It is not advisable to drive any vehicle with a blown freeze plug.
if the engine is smoking and overheating the head gasket is blown or you popped a freeze plug
Not the plug itself, but that lets all of the coolant out so the engine will quicly overheat.
With the freeze plug out it will be impossible to keep water and coolant in the engine as it will all leak out through the freeze plug hole. The engine will over heat and self destruct after a while.
My first diagnosis would be a blown freeze plug, check that and you may find your problem.
If you have a (casting plug) or what is commonly called a (freeze plug) that is leaking the only repair is to replace it.
