Depends on how large. up to 6 inches square cut a piece of sheetrock the right thickness 8 inches square. on the back side, cut thru the paper 1 inch in all the way around. break the sheetrock and peel the 4 1 inch pieces off the front paper. This will leave you with a 6 inch square piece with a 1 inch border of paper Mud the 1 inch strip and apply to the hole. Smooth the strip and mud, Top coat the patch and sand. For larger holes, strips of wood, plywood prefered, 2 inches wide and as long as the sides of the hole can be placed behind the sheetrock and screwed in place. The piece of sheetrock filling the hole is then screwed in also, tape, mud and sand. For very large holes, you need to cut the hole back to the studs. Split down the middle of the stud and replace as much as needed in height. A plywood backer can be used here also at the top and bottom of the patch

We fix holes in drywall in the ceiling by placing a piece of wood like a shim or other piece of scrap wood through the hole. This would be placed across the hole so that it could be screwed into on each end through the drywall to hold it in place. It may take more than one piece of wood if it is a large hole. Now, with a scrap piece of drywall you can cut it to fit and screw it to the wood and finish it as you would normally with drywall mud and type.

how large? for a 8"x8" hole, cut it square and cut the same size out of a fresh sheet of wallboard. take 2 pieces of 2x4 10" or so long and, using 1 5/8 drywall screws, affix the boards vertically to the inside of the hole so 1/2 the edge of the board is visible to brace the new piece in. place the new piece in the hole and secure with screws. use drywall tape on the edges and mud smooth. sand after drying and repeat if needed. if the holes any bigger, just cut back to the studs (approx 16") and use the studs as your supports.

Well first, I would have to travel to your house. Probably on a plane, but maybe not, depending where you live.

I'd then go to the store to get some spackle, or maybe a piece of new drywall, and fill in the hole/replace the drywall sheet.

If spackling, I'd fill in the hole with spackle and let it dry, then sand it down level with the wall, and paint over it.

Anything up to a foot square, I would replaster. Either trowel it in or use a piece of plywood bigger than the hole, put plastic film on it and enough plaster to patch the hole. Put it in place and either hold in place till the plaster sets, wedge a board under it or run a couple of sheetrock screws through the board and into the lath. After it dries remove the board and finish. Larger than a foot, I would cut a piece of sheetrock the right size, screw it up tape and mud it.

You would use a utility knife to cut a square out around the hole. Go for nice straight lines. Measure them so they have even sides if possible. This will make it much easier to cut your patch piece. There are metal tab pieces that you will purchase at any major home improvement store. The rep at the store can visually show you how to use these pieces, but in short, you screw the tabs into the existing drywall to support the patch piece you are putting in. Once the new piece is in and the tabs are dealt with, you would tape, mud, dry, sand, and paint as usual.

If it's small, fill it with mud (drywall compound. ) or caulk like Alex ll. If large, make a backing patch from spare drywall and fit into the hole, hold it with 2 screws, then tape it with mesh tape, then mud it.
