Use the metal thing with the ruff edges to ruffen up the area where the hole is going alittle over the size of your patch to ensure complete coverage then put your glue on..I think you put it on both sides and let it dry a while, (read directions on package) then press it on working out any air bubbles. Also make sure you cut your patch plenty larger than the hole size
Drain the water to below the level of the leak, and let it dry. Glue a patch over the hole, and let it dry according to the directions in the patch repair kit. Refill pool and enjoy swimming.
There are patch kits made especially for this do not repair, throw it away and fit a replacement.

Just depends on how bad the leak is and where it is coming from. If it is in an elbow of the pipe it can be sealed with sealant or rubber seals if it is elsewhere it is best to call a plumber.
Unless you dug the whole line up you probably wouldn't find the leak unless it was a very large leak which would bring the water to the surface, You would be better off just installing a new line. Call a leak detection company. They will find your leak to within inches, and you will be able to dig down, repair the line where it is broken, and repair it.
You can try to repair a small leak in a diesel fuel tank without taking off and welding by using specially made putty.
