The thermostat is inside of this. just take the bolts out and lift it off. The thermostat is inside. Put a new 192 degree thermostat in and replace the water outlet housing. Make sure the tabs on the thermostat fit the tabs on the engine. Make sure the spring is pointed towards the engine.

I removed the thermostat, removed the mechanism and put the framework back in. I know this not the best repair, but it works. I think I was getting an air pocket by the thermostat. Steam will not open a thermostat the thermostat has to be submerged in water. The car was taken to a Lincoln dealer several times. After spending several thousands dollars at the dealer mechanics and several independent repair shops I did my own repair by cannibalizing the thermostat. Since I did that repair the car never overheated again.This type of repair can cause hot and cold spots in the engine. We have put on ten thousand miles since my own repair.
