I think you have to remove the lift gate interior plastic off. I haven't looked at ours yet so look for any exposed Philips screws. Remove if any, and if it's anything like removing the door panel you'll have to pry it off the lift gate. The fasteners that hold the lift gate panel are replaceable if they get ruined.
