This is my basic self-taught method that saves time w/o removing the transmission from vehicle. I am replacing 1991 A-140e auto trans differential w/ snap-ring axle spline ends (notbolted axle ends). Remove both axles from differential. You can find instructions in most manuals or online. Have both sides of vehicle jacked up w/supports. Remove the 2 bottom motor/trans support brackets. Loosen long bolt (do not remove completely) the passenger side upper motor mount (this will lower the trans. slightly for clearance). Drain diff. fluid. Remove 4 steering rack bracket bolts. You will need to carefully push the steering rack up out of the way in order to remove differential gear assembly. Remove driver side bearing plate and the back plate. Carefully remove speedometer worm gear located at top of differential. On inside diff. case, remove 2 bolts from carrier bearing hold-down bracket. Carefully, pull out Diff. assembly - it has to be angled just-right (it will come-out) in order for clearance. I went to Auto Zone to "borrow" bearing puller/installer tools. Ordered replacement carrier bearings w/ race from WIT-Trans Parts online. Make sure to check bearing stamp ID for exact match. I noted that the differential gears have an unusual amount of play and I still may need to pull a used diff. from yard in addition to replacing bearings/race. Good Luck.
