Slide the leather boot down from the collar (at the base of the shift knob). Look around to the front facing portion of the shifter near the collar just described. There will be about 1/2" of a metal horseshoe pin showing in a horizontal direction. Pry it out and pull up on the knob. I will be doing this tomorrow to replace mine with a leather wrapped unit from a Bonneville.

One thing I learned from youtube video is if you are prone to jack rabbit starts and heavier throttle, the belt will wear faster due to higher stresses on the belt according to John who does part one and two of replacing timing belt on 02 Accent! I cannot stress how much cheaper it is to replace belt sooner rather than later because if you drop a valve on a piston due to belt breaking...you are in for a real major repair or possibly engine destruction!!
