No , according to the Gates website ( they make timing belts etc. ) the 1.9 liter engine in a 1994 Ford Escort is NOT an interference engine
The timing belt is located behind the timing cover on the front of the engine as you are looking at it from the passenger side front fender. The serpentine belt has to come off to get to it.
I believe the answer is no. I have a 1994 Escort LX with the 1.9 liter engine. I broke the timing belt, and there was no damage to the engine. Yes, it is no. I had the same experience last night and nothing happened to the engine. I have a 94 Escort LX with 1.9L engine too.
