U-Joint OverhaulExcept Double Cardan Universal # Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle and place it in a vise, being careful not to damage it. # Remove the snaprings, which retain the bearings in the flange and in the driveshaft. # Remove the driveshaft tube from the vise and position the U-joint in the vise with a socket smaller than the bearing can on one side and a socket larger than the bearing cap on the other side. # Slowly tighten the jaws of the vise so that the smaller socket forces the U-joint spider and the opposite bearing into the large socket. # Remove the other side of the spider in the same manner (if applicable) and remove the spider assembly from the driveshaft. Discard the spider assemblies. # Clean all foreign matter from the yoke areas at the end of the driveshaft (s). # Start the new spider and one of the bearing cap assemblies into a yoke by positioning the yoke in a vise with the spider positioned in place with one of the bearing cap assemble positioned over one of the holes in the yoke. Slowly close the vise, pressing the bearing cap assembly in the yoke. Press the cap in far enough so that the retaining snapring can be installed. Used the smaller socket to recess the bearing cap. # Open the vise and position the opposite bearing cap assembly over the proper hole in the yoke with the socket that is smaller than the diameter of the bearing cap located on the cap. Slowly close the vise, pressing the bearing cap into the hole in the yoke with the socket. Make sure that the spider assembly is in line with the bearing cap in far enough so that the retaining snapring cap in far enough so that the retaining snapring can be installed. # Install all remaining U-joint in the same manner. Install the driveshaft and grease the new U-joints.

How do you know what ujoint rear shaft rear poisition on 94 jeep wrangler?

Tell the auto parts counter person which joint you want to replace and they'll get you the right one. It doesn't matter what way it goes in, it's all the same.

How to remove the universal joint on a 1983 dodge 250 van?

you need to remove the circlips holding the cups in place in the ears of the ear of the ujoint. Set the ujoint on its side and place a pipe or large socket under neath such that the ujoint cup will slip inside the pipe. Place a smaller socket or peice of pipe (exactly the same size as the cup on the top side of the ujoint and give it a few sharp raps with a heavy hammer. May need to use penetrating oil and or heat to break it loose. Dont pound on the ujoint cups directly with the hammer. you will break em. also make sure the pipes or sockets are just the right size. You will destroy the yokes of your drive shaft if you pound on it with the wrong sizes. Of course you could get the right tool from your local part source or auto zone for no charge but it isn't as fun!

Why does the rear ujoint keep blowing out from the driveshaft to the axle?

A worn pinion flange or the drive shaft where the u-joint goes in these holes may be wallered out some

How do you get the rear U-joint off a 1989 Chevrolet G20 van - is it pressed on?

If your just removing the shaft there are 4 nuts that attach the 2 u bolts or brackets to the rear yoke. Could it be splined? It may slide out (like the front U-Joint at the back of the transmission). Look at the carrier bearing where the two drive shafts meet (I am assuming that you have a long wheelbase van that has two driveshafts with a carrier bearing in between them). This may be a clue to getting the shaft(s) off. Just my two cents. Good luck. Richard Rea It is probably sealed to the shaft with nylon or some such plastic. They inject it into the carrier after placing the ujoint in place. When it cools its there forever. You have to heat the carrier with a torch to melt the stuff to get it out. You will know when its working because the melted material will ooze out all over the place. So be careful it will burn you. You have to replace the ujoint after doing this because the bearings will be shot and all the grease that was there is now burned away. BE SURE the ujoint is bad before doing this because you will destroy it to remove it. Que

How do you fix the front drive shaft on your 1996 Chevrolet Silverado?

Assuming you need new U-joints on the shaft I will try to explain... First remove the bearing retaining u bolts from front differential and the tranny. Be careful while separating the shaft from parts( you may have to use a pry bar) that the bearings do not fall out of the cups. There are snap rings on one side of the U joint, remove those with a pair of needle nose pliers and then prop the shaft on a 2x4 or something and pound out the old ujoint with a ball peen hammer and a socket so you do not bend the shaft where the ujoint is in. Once you have it loose wiggle it out and reinstall the new ujoint but do NOT pound it in with the hammer you'll end up damaging the new bearings, repeat with other side if needed. Hope this makes sense and helps you out.

How do you replace front driver side axle?

depends for what kind of vehical. IF it's a car, the axle is likely easy to do. IF it is a 4x4 truck with manual locking hubs, it's a lame job. if its a car, jack it up on the side the axel needs to come out , take the tire off, and everything else in the way including your brake. and slide the axle joint out , just take the whole thing out, its garbage now. Take the new one you bought. slide it in with grease and start putting it all back together. IF its a truck with manual locking hubs, you will want to jack it up with the tire off faswell, take the brakes off, and make sure you do not lose any of the bearings.. clipps.. spacers.. rings.. any of it, and remember the order you took them off in, as it is important to do so. once that stuff is all removed you have acces to your broken axel assuming it's broken at the UJOInt which is more common, slide it out, take the axel to a mechanic and have the ujoint compressed to come out. buy a new ujoint of the same model, have it pressed back in place of the axel, take the axel back home and slide it back into the front differential, and start putting everything back together!
