To replace the whole tail light just open the tail gate and you will see two screws holding the light in place. take out the screws and the light can be pulled away from the body of the car, you will then need to simply unplug the bulbs and it will come straight out.

If its only a bulb that needs changing, once you have the tail light removed from the body of the car the bulbs will just unclip from the tail light.

Last I checked the LS doesnt' have a tail gate, they have a trunk lid. There are 3 nuts that hold the housing in place, they should be 10mm (if I remember correctly) You will need to pull the carpet liner away from the area of the lights so you can access the nuts to remove the light housing. When you pull the housing out, you will need to unclip the WIRE HARNESS from the bulb and then the bulb will need to be twisted in order to remove from the tail light housing.

_____

That 1st answer is totally WRONG!!!!

1st take off trunk skid plate, BE CAREFUL not to break clips!

Then follow above instructions, pull back carpet and use 10mm to remove the 3 nuts, you will need a short ratchet to work it best.

I can't speak for a 2004. Mine is a 2001 and it turns out to be very easy. On the driver's side, remove the jack (styrofoam comes out too). From there you can see the light assembly. Squeeze the two black clips and pull it out. Light bulb twists out. Voila!
This just worked on my 2004 A6. Passenger side is the same. You need good light to see the clips. There are 3 bulbs in the housing: back up, turn signal, and brake. For an A6 the bulbs are the old fashioned type. Brakes have two filaments, the others have one filament.

Just did it, the light on the right( when facing it from rear )will have a piece of metal on the bottom either left or right light that can be removed with the door open. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove the single screw. This will get the small piece of metal out of the way. Look close, you can miss it if you are not thorough. Once you have that off, it is self explanatory.

Tail lights and brake lights are easy to replace on a Jetta. Open your trunk, and look on the inside on the side of the broken tail light. There is a little compartment with two knobs. Turn them and the compartment will open. Squeeze the tabs on the light module and it will come out. Unscrew the dead bulb and screw in your replacement. Replace the light module, making sure it clips into place. Then close the compartment and turn the knobs to latch it. You are done!

I would like to know how to do this also. It would seem like a easy task. But if you have ever tried this it seems almost impossible. Is there anyone out there that can tell us how to do it?
