You sure it is the gauge that is broke? I bet it is the sending unit.
There is a battery light above the engine temperature gauge
I believe that is Motorcraft DY961
On a 1998 Mercury Mystique : To the left of your tachometer is the seatbelt reminder light and Under your fuel gauge is the airbag readiness light ( if the light stays on or flashes take your vehicle in to have the airbag ( Supplemental Restraint System , SRS ) system checked out / repaired
Take out the fuel gauge and fish for the magnet inside the fuel tank. Then disassemble the fuel gauge to replace the broken magnet. Reassemble and replace. Done...
you need to replace the gas gauge sending unit in the tank, or your gauge is broken
If it is the gauge you have to pull the gauge cluster. If it is the cable you have to get under the car and replace it. It will be the only cable on the tranny. Good luck

Either the gauge is broken or the sender is broken.
Find out what's wrong and replace the broken part. It's either a fuse, the sending unit (in the tank) the gauge (in the dash) or a damaged wire or connector.
You need to replace your thermostat to get your temp gauge to work. You can go to a salvage yard and get a replacement seat belt.
