I'm sure your talking about a JOHN DEERe. Draw a picture of the position of the pulleys. Have someone help you, using a piece of 2x4 lumber force the spring loaded tension pulley toward the front of the deck and hold it this will give you slack. Then you can remove the belt off the pulleys on the deck. When replacing the belt put it over each pulley on the deck and force the tension pulley foward. Then start the belt in the groove on the drive pulley and using a pipe wrench with the jaws on the inside and outside of the pulley, while holding the belt in place rotate the pulley the belt will drop into the groove

Ford recommends it be inspected and replaced if needed at 60,000 miles. I have a 2002 ZX5 and I changed mine at 120,000 miles. 120 is a bit much but there was no visible wear on the belt right up to the time I replaced it. Also when you do replace the belt, spend the extra money and change the idlers and tensioner. Most timing belt "failures" I've seen are from the idlers or tensioner wearing out. Dealer cost is about $345 for parts and labor.
