The dash has to be removed to gain access to the heater box. The heater box then comes out and is split open to replace the core.
Drain the water from the cooling system. Remove the water hose from the heater core. Remove the heater core retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new heater core.

Answer replacing the heater core on a 1991 explorer is a simple job and takes around 30 minutes. disconnect the hoses from core in engine bay. remove access cover located below the dash on passenger side. remove core, replace core.
Drain the coolant, remove the glove box and base to the dash. youll find the heater core on the passanger side.
you may have to remove the intake from the block and then use an extractor tool to remove the rest. then replace the connector.

I recently installed a new heater core in a 1991 G10 van. I removed the heater fan housing, the heater core hoses, then the compartment came out. After removing the campartment has to be taken apart to replace the core. Alot of work but not all that hard.
