You have to take apart the breather assembley on the top of the engine. This is that big metal pipe on top has to be unbolted and then the bracket that holds your accelerator cables , then there are 6 bolts on the top of a smaller black cover on the top center of engine. Inside you will find 2 wires yes 2 with 2 ingnition coils sitting on top of the #2 and #4 cylinders. Just pull out coils after unbolting them and unhooking the wires.
take off the distributor cap see what you find.
There are six (6) ignition coils and six (6) spark plugs for a V8 3.5 liter engine.

The 2001 Ford Mustang GT has a 4.6 L - SOHC - V8 engine with COIL ON PLUG ignition system so there are ( 8 ) coils
There is 1 per cylinder.
I paid 200 for a mechanic to replace it. I had to replace 3 coils in the last 3 years. I have a 2001 expedition
On a 2001 Ford Expedition : Both the 4.6 and 5.4 have the Coil On Plug ( C.O.P. ) ignition system with ( 8 ) individual coils
You have a random cylinder misfire. Assuming your car is 2001+ replace the ignition coils and spark plugs. You may have to clean/replace the MAF. Had exact same codes on my QX4.
I would say about $500 Max
on 3.1v6 they are---5-2---3-6---4-1
This engine actually has 6 ignition coils, one per cylinder. They are located on top of the valve covers.
