Because your switch is bad, replace the light assembly
had to replace the battery in my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer but now the theft light is blinking, it is cranking up. How can I stop it?
You don't. The switch is all one , you will have to replace the entire switch.
On a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer : The " CHECK ENGINE " warning light is just to the left of the battery voltage gauge
Why ? Just replace it.
It should have only a fuse and a switch, no relay. Check ALL of the fuses with a test light.

To reset the service engine soon light on a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer, you can buy a scan tool. Make sure you note down the numbers before scanning.
The brake light is controlled by a little button switch that's mounted high on the brake pedal lever. If you follow the brake pedal upwards with your fingers, you'll feel the button. It has a spring in the button that pushes the button back out when you release the brake pedal. If the spring jams, the brake lights stay on. Replace the button switch.
An ABS fault.
check the brake light switch
According to the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer Owner Guide : ( fuse # 24 is a 15 amp fuse for the cigarette lighter and OBD II )
