2001 Nissan Maxima, I suspect the Altima is similar.
Pre-Install
* Download factory Manual PDF if you do not have it (torque and diagrams)
* Buy Hub nut socket (32 mm) * Buy/borrow Loaner tool, front end kit with 4-5 pullers, borrow ball joint press. borrow spring press if you want to change worn struts while you're in there.
Removal
Use torch to heat most bolts, use bolt breaker spray (PB blast)
* Remove cotter pin and loosen hub lock nut and wheel nuts (use long breaker bar!)
* Jack up, remove wheels * Remove outer tie rod cotter pin and crown bolt, pop tie rod out with puller
* Remove 2 lower bolts on Strut & any brake lines must be detached from strut
* Remove lower bolt that goes to control arm on stabilizer bar linkage * Remove hub lock nut, pull out drive axle
* Remove lower ball joint cotter pin, crown bolt, pop hub assembly up away from ball joint with puller, pull hub off set aside on wood or bricks, be careful as to not stretch brake lines
* Remove control arm (about 6 bolts) and have a machine shop press out ball joints and press in new ones. If you can hand press with ball joint press, more power to you. The press did not work for me.
Installation is basically the reverse of removal. Take before photos and bag and label all parts & bolts. Torque to spec and lube ball joints, drive axle for easy reinstall. This is a good time to replace any other worn parts such as tie rod ends, stabilizer links, front struts as well. Also an alignment should be done after this.
If you mean the lower suspension arm (wishbone) ball joint, it is fixed into the arm. This means you need to replace the whole lower arm.

you need to pull the valve cover and oil pan and front cover and then you can replace the upper timing chain on the altima but if you are going to do this job i would recommend you replace the gear that hooks the lower and upper chain together this is called the idler gear and it is the one that causes the noise all the time.
