Remove the tire and wheel from your 1993 Mercury Cougar. Remove the ball joint retaining nut. Pound the ball joint out with a hammer. Reverse the process to install your new ball joint.

You can not just change the ball joint , you have to replace the whole lower control arm with ball joint.

Since it's the lower, I think you can replace just the ball joint. Most of the time the uppers are replaced by replacing the entire arm.

The arm has two bolts to the frame and the ball joint has a pinch bolt to the steering knuckle. place a jack under the knuckle and jack it up a little, then pry ball joint out, unbolt frame bolts and pull it out. If you mean the lower suspension arm (wishbone) ball joint, it is fixed into the arm. This means you need to replace the whole lower arm.

Get a big hammer and beat the lower ball joint out from the top of the lower control arm then look at the new ball joint make sure they match before you press them in.

The ball joint is an integral part of the lower control arms. Ergo you must replace the entire lower control arm. Dealer cost is about $450 ea there's no aftermarket availability that I have found. My car's not worth the price of the parts ro replace the arms. RATS.
