The starter is located under the intake manifold/plenum on these engines (the black plastic thing there in front of the engine). Start by removing the battery and tray. Remove the air filter housing cover, this will help slide the manifold back in and out so the throttle position sensor doesn't rub on it. Remove the 2 bolts holding down the top engine dressing/cover. Disconnect all electrical connectors on top of engine, injectors, sensors, etc, all visible. Un-clip injector harness from fuel rail. Remove ground strap by injectors, 1 bolt. Remove 1 bolt holding down vacuum solenoid on left side of manifold; this same solenoid has 2 hoses going to it, disconnect those. Hang wires to the side. You must remove 2 small coolant hoses located near the throttle body, best to remove the harness blocking it, 1 bolt. Remove hood latch assembly 3 bolts, hang to the front. Remove 4 intake plenum bolts securing it to the manifold. Lift it away from engine carefully, one more sensor directly on left side of plenum, disconnect it while the plenum is loose, more slack/room to maneuver. Plenum is somewhat free for movement, carefully manipulate plenum out of vehicle moving it to the right and up/out. You now see the starter; remove the 2 electrical connectors. Remove knock sensor connector to allow upper 14mm bolt to access and remove easier. Loosen the 2 mounting bolt (17mm and 14mm) one at a time. Remove the bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal. Warning, the aftermarket starters for CRV and Element models may be incorrect, meaning if you put it in and it has a screeching, grinding, metallic noise, even though starter looks exact, it's wrong. I put in 2 remanufactured ones, same brand; found third one-looks totally different but works just the same. Find a different brand/style starter, it may appear different physically, but that's just the way they messed it up in the aftermarket world. Or just buy new O.E, to the tune of $1,061.00, dealer told me (because they don/t have a remanufactured unit available). Dealer also told me they had that problem before on these engines with remanufactured units. Don't forget your stereo code. Enjoy:)

The starter for a 2002 Honda CRV costs $765.03, without any parts mark-up. With 2.1 hours labor to replace and at $90 an hour labor, that totals 954.03 + 53.55 tax = 1007.58.
