If your question is how to replace the motor, I'd go to autozone.com for the basic procedure with diagrams. If the motor has gone bad and you want to repair it, you'll find parts hard to find unless you know an electric motor repairman.
roof scoop or sun roof
you can't crank it shut, the motor is electronically worked by a switch. You will probably need to replace the switch or the moonroof motor is no longer good.
on the head liner on your car you will see a small cap near the dome light, turn it 90 deg and remove it, with the correct Allen wrench tun the bolt you see, that is directly connected to the sun roof motor.
If your Volvo 960's sun roof is not working, you might have an issue with the roof motor or with the fuse. You could also have a problem with the control switch or the wiring.

We need to tear out a spot on our roof. How difficult is it to remove and replace roof shingles on our own?
The motor for the sunroof will be on the back side of the roof. The only way of getting to this is by dropping the headliner out of the car. Once you have the headliner out, there will be two screws or bolts that holds the motor in. remove the two screws and the motor should drop down, then just unplug your wires and you will be able to replace it then.... GOOD LUCK.
Sun roof
Start with the electric motor. Use a jumper wire on the positive wire of the motor and a hot wire. Does it work? If so, then you have to test the wiring harness back to the relay/fuse, the activation switch, and the battery. If the motor didn't work, then you need to replace the motor. If the motor works, but the top doesn't, then you need to check for broken cables or binding in the roof structure.
