I found it easiest to lift the rear hatch while changing the bulb. The bulb lenses are held in with two expansion plugs. They look like Phillips screws and they will turn, but they are not screws and won't back out. Use a small screwdriver to pry up the center of the screw ( it's about a quarter inch around ). Pry it up all the way around, then you can pull it the rest of the way with your fingernails. After both are pulled out, simply pull the expansion plugs out. Lift out the lens unit. Turn it a quarter turn and separate the two pieces. The bulb pulls put for replacement. After replacing the bulb ( #168) simply assemble the two pieces back together, put it in place and replace the expansion plugs. The whole job took about two minutes.

Oldsmobile stopped making Alero in 2004 and GM stopped making Oldsmobile in 2004, so some mistake here?
You must remove the entire tailight panel - remove trunk liner and the recessed nuts.
