It is in the door latch. You need to replace those switches. There are two in the drivers door and one in the passengers door. Take the door panels off and remove door latch and replace swithes.

I have yet to do anything with it, but from what I know about VWs (i have owned and worked on them for 12 years) the door sensor is located in the door latch. I am currently looking into whether I can replace just the sensor or if i have to replace the whole latch...I read that the latch costs about 150.00. to install it, you would have to remove the door panel which can be tricky.

Pull the door panel off, remove the door latch assembly from inside the door, and replace the switch which is hold onto the latch with one screw on the backside of the latch.

I have dealt with this problem before at our bodyshop. Basically, a spring inside the latch has broke, and now there is no way to release the latch, even by manually pulling on the release lever at the latch. Prepare to replace the latch, as it is not repairable. Be prepared to be working inside the car. To make it easier to work, unbolt the seat, and remove from the car. Remove the door panel, and also the door handle. You will have to chisel at the plastic part of the latch, and break it off bit by bit. Eventually you will be able to release the latch. good luck
