Remove the rear tire and wheels. Remove the emergency brake shoe spring. The brake shoe will come off. Reverse the process to install the new brake shoe.
Actually , the 1996 Ford Explorer has small emergency brake shoes inside the back of the disc brake rotors on the REAR brakes only
if you dont know you should not attempt it.is it worth your life????
Brake shoes worn out. Replace them and have the drumns resurfaced.
I'm assuming your 1996 Sport is like my 1995 Explorer XLT and has disc brakes front and rear that take brake pads . On the inside of the rear brake rotors is a small set of emergency / parking brake shoes . I know this because I had an emergency brake shoe stick on and was causing a vibration and the wheel to get hot so I had the e-brake shoes changed on both sides and everything re-lubricated etc.
Disc brakes , front and rear ( there are also a small set of brake shoes in the backside of the rear rotors that are used for the parking / emergency brake )
i replace my rear brake shoes on 2001 dodge grand caravan and my emergency brake is still not working
They are inside the drum part of the rear disc brakes. Remove the rotor and you will see the shoes.
Take it to a garage and ask them "Can you replace my brake shoes please"
The brake pads are actually shoes. The emergency brake relies on the rear brake shoes being applied by tension on the emergency brake cable against the rear drums to hold the car stationary. In other words, the rear brakes double as the emergency (parking) brakes.
Replace the rear brake shoes with a non-metalic brake lining, new hold down hardware and have the drums turned.
Make sure the emergency brake is released and spray WD40 around the front and back of the rotor. Remove any retaining clips on the lugs. There are ususally two. Then start beating the rotor with a hammer. Eventually it will free up and you can force it off. Sometimes the emergency brake shoes will come off with the rotor if they are rusted through. If this happens it just multipied your job by 10 because if the E pads come off their brackets you have to replace the entire emergency brake shoe and that's a nightmare. Have fun.
If the truck has disc brakes on the rear then the park brake shoes are located inside the rear rotors. You have to remove the brake calipers, pads and rotors to access them
