easiest way is to remove the in and out pipes make sure you mark which is which then undo the 2 12mm bolts that hold the filter in place lift up then undo the water plug sensor then its just like changing an oil filter on the bench then do reversal of the proceedure then pump the pump on top of the filter but leave the outlet pipe off so you can see when the diesel comes out the otherside then connect the outlet pipe then continue until pump goes hard then start in normal manner it may miss for a short time then run even

I was told by Mitsubishi of groton that the fuel filter was in the Gas tank so there was no real need to replace it.
It is located on the passenger side firewall, under the hood.

There is no fuel filter located in line. The only fuel filter is located in the fuel tank.
fuel filter should be located inside engine compartment monted on fire wall.remember to depressurize fuel system and DISCONNECT battery when doing this.

THE FILTER IS LOCATED INSIDE THE GAS TANK.
That might depend on the year Lancer you're talking about. For my 2008 GTS, my fuel filter is located inside my fuel pump, meaning when I have to replace the filter, I've got to replace the pump. I don't know how long Mitsubishi has been doing this, so you might be in the same boat as me.
