Depressurize the fuel system. Remove the fuel tank cap and attach an appropriate fuel pressure gauge (the T80L-9974-B will work) to the valve to release the fuel pressure. Drain the fuel into a gas can or other appropriate container.

Siphon off as much fuel as you can out of the tank and soak up any spilled fuel with clean rags. Remove the fuel tank from the truck with the fuel pump still attached to it.

  • 3

Clean off any dirt around the fuel pump's attaching flange. Make sure it is clean and dry to prevent any contaminants from entering the tank.

  • 4

Remove the fuel pump's locking ring by turning it counter-clockwise with a locking ring removal tool. Disconnect the fuel pump and bracket assembly from the fuel tank. Remove and discard the seal gasket from the locking ring.

  • 5

Lightly coat a new seal ring with heavy grease and place it in fuel tank's ring groove. The grease should hold the ring in place during assembly. Install the new fuel pump and bracket assembly into the fuel tank. Install the locking ring and tighten it until it is secure.

  • 6

Install the tank back into the truck. Fill the tank with at least 10 gallons of gasoline and check for any leaks in the system.

Attach a pressure gauge to the throttle body valve. Turn on the ignition for three seconds and turn it back off. Repeat this until the pressure gauge shows at least 30 pounds per square inch (this should take five to 10 times). Check for leaks at the fittings again. Then remove the pressure gauge, start the Ranger's engine and check for leaks one more time.
