you have to take the bottom steering column apart.
You would have to disconnect the wires from the stock ignition, so you would have to tear it out unless you could find a way to do it without it.
rear window wiper perhaps? That's what it is on a 96 Golf

I dont know if you need to or not but, I do know there was a recall on the ignition for 96 Grand AM. I would call a local dealer and ask if this pertained to your car also.

take off the covers at the bottom of the dash. on the left side of the steering wheel you will see a circular pink and black thing with loads of wires. this will pull out with a small bit of force. the ignition switch is what this was plugged into. you will see 2 small screws with red plastic on the faces of them. undo these two screws then pull out the switch just like you did with the other thing. put in the new switch replace the two scres plug the wires back in and reattatch the dash.!!

i also own a 96 passat GLX VR6 and it is alot of work to change the alternator in a vr6 you pretty much have to take the front of the car off you need to remove the headlights to get to the raidator then you have to remove the radator to get to the alternator from there its a pretty simple process you need to remove the belt from the alternator then remove the bolts that hold it on and put the new one on and use a screwdriver to replace the belt onto your new alternator then you have to put the whole front of the car back on hope that helps
I had the same problem with my '96 Passat when i got it. All i had to do was to put my key in the driver side door and wait until all the doors were unlocked. That unlocked my fuel door as well. you.

I just replaced the ignition switch and lock on my '96 Escort. They come as one unit, so you can't just replace the lock tumbler. Remove the steering wheel (using caution for the airbag), and then remove the multi-function switch. Now you can remove the ignition switch and lock.
I would replace the ignition module in the distributor. Also need to make sure the coil and wire is good too.
