The shift cable on an 01 Chevy Cavalier is replaced by removing the retaining screws, removing the cable from the shifter, and pulling it from the vehicle. A new cable can then be locked into place and bolted down.
Disconnect the positive cable from your 2003 Chevy Cavalier battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.
There is no cable, the speedo is run electronically.

The easy way to open the hood manually on a 1998 Chevy Cavalier, when the cable is not working is to put the car on a hoist and use a long pole to trip the hood latch. Then lower the vehicle and open the hood the rest of the way. Replace or repair the cable for the hood latch before closing the hood.
Is this a manual transmission? If so, this is a pretty common problem for these cars. Probably going to have to replace the shifter cable. About $50 at Advance.

Before anything you have to remove negative battery cable to avoid to get a shok from that. You will have to release the bolts to replace the starter.
At the "Y" in the cables at the rear of the car
Remove the cover from your 1986 Chevy Cavalier radio. Remove the radio retaining screws. Slide the radio out and remove the wiring harness and the antenna cable.
If the cable is broken you should replace it.
