You would have to try all the possible combinations until you found the right one for a brief case you dont have the combination for, and some briefcases combinations can be reset and some cant, it all depends on the brand.
Both combination locks and key-entry locks provide an equal level of safety.
I think combination locks are safer since key locks are easy to break into with a knife or a ice prick to unlock the key lock.
Sphero locks cannot be reset - only resettable locks can be reset. The Sphero locks come with a permanent combo.
Typically, briefcases come with random numbers as combination locks. These random numbers can be remembered easily but can also be guessed easily by thieves, as many codes are standard between manufacturers. However, for you to be able to secure your briefcase, you need to choose a special combination that would be difficult to guess. You can do this by resetting the default combination to a new combination code of your choice. If you don’t know how to do this, here is a simple guide on how to set your combination lock on your briefcase. • Open your briefcase. You need to open your briefcase using the default combination lock. You can do this by turning the numbers and pushing the button to open the case. • Look for the reset mechanism of the lock. Usually, briefcases have their reset mechanism as a single button or pin. There are some who have two buttons in them. If your briefcase has the single button, you can just push it and hold it there. • Enter a random combination. You need to test the lock before you input your desired combination. Choose a random combination that is easy to remember. • Close your briefcase and test it. Turn the lock in another value to see if it will open. This should not open the briefcase, because you have stored a different combination. After checking it, turn the numbers with your combination and it should open right after you pushed the button. • Change the lock to your desired combination. You can now change the lock of your briefcase to your desired combination that is easy to remember, but hard to guess. If you want, you can use your birthday or your address. Make sure that you take note of your combination code for reference in case you forget it. Setting a combination lock for your briefcase is not a difficult task; however, you should not forget the combination that you have set or else you will have a much bigger problem. If you are a businessman, and you’ve got confidential and important documents with you, you can carry along a briefcase to keep such documents safe and secured.

Follow these rules to open your briefcase:1. Set the briefcase on its side with the latches facing you.2. Dial the three-digit combination on each latch using the serrated metal wheels with the numbers embossed on them. Be sure to dial the numbers one at a time, left to right.3.Place your thumbs on the two latch buttons and slide outwards to spring open the latches.4. Lock the briefcase by closing the case, snapping the latches until they click shut, then turning the numeric wheels on the combination locks to scramble the numbers.
With the briefcase that I have, I had to put in the unlock combination. Then hold down the unlock button or latch and while holding it down change the combination. Once you release the latch or button the combination will have changed. Try out the new combination to verify.
It depends on the make of the lock. Many time you need to know the combination. Sesame locks require a pin that goes in the shackle hole when the shackle is 180 degrees from open. Master combination locks with a scroll combination require a reset key that can only be used when the current combination is known in order to change. Other padlocks require the lock to be open and the shackle turned 180 degrees and pushed down while setting the combination.
