How do you reset your Leopard password?

If you have forgotten the administrator password in Mac OS X Leopard, you will need to reset the firmware password.

First thing, do you have any other administrator accounts on the Mac that you are using, if so, simply login to one of those accounts and reset your account password.


If not, you will need to reset the Mac firmware password, to do this, you will need the Mac OS X Leopard install disc that came included with your Mac when you purchased it, unless of course you bought Mac OS X Leopard as an upgrade, then you will need this installation disc.


Simply insert the disc into your Mac, and restart, while the Mac is rebooting (before it displays the grey screen with the Apple logo), press and hold down the 'D' key on your keyboard, this will boot your Mac using the CD/DVD in the drive.


When the menu appears, select 'Firmware Utility', and follow the prompts to reset the Mac Firmware Password.

1. Boot into single user mode (press Command-S at power on)
2. Type fsck -fy
3. Type mount -uw /
4. Type launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.DirectoryServices.plist
5. Type dscl . -passwd /Users/username password, replacing username with the targeted user and password with the desired password.
6. Reboot
