You did not specifiy a model or engine size so I will try and give you the generic method. By the battery there should be a square box with a cover. remove the cover and you will see numbered holes for a scan tool to connect. There is a small extension to the square box containing two empty sockets a push button and an LED. With the ignition key in the on position but the engine not running push the button for two to four seconds. The led should start to blink out a code. Push the button again to advance to the next code. Keep pushing the button until the trouble code repeats. To clear code hold down the push button for over 4 seconds.
