1. put the key in theignition.
2.turn it to the on position where all the lights come on.
3.then turn it 3 time off and on and what.
that should do it.
If you turn the igition on-off on-off on-off in less than 5 secs, the check engine light will flash the codes.
You need a scan tool.

The trouble codes on an 1988 Dakota are two digit codes. Code 1 does not exist.
Sorry, only a scanner can retrieve trouble codes on OBDII vehicles.....
Check the fluid level. Check the linkage. Check all computers for trouble codes.

Either with a scan tool, or by cycling the key on, off, on, off, on and reading the number that comes up in the odometer.
