Depends on what caused it to go into sleep mode to begin with. If you pressed a button to put in standby then you most likely will have to press the same button to wake it up. If you are in standby because of a power fluctuation (on a laptop) then you will need to switch from battery power to ac power to get it to wake up.
Sometimes you just need to press the power button to wake it up.

Click on turn off computer. It will bring you to the menu. Click to standby.

If you want to make it hibernate you simply turn the thing off. :)

Stand by in windows is where the computer is still turned on and will resume when you want it to. Hibernate is where it saves your session (keeps what you are doing, yes everything) and then turns off the computer. When it is turned back on your session will be restored.
The main reason people have their computer in safe mode is due to unreliability of the computer in normal mode. If the computer is turning off in safe mode then the sooner it is with a Qualified Computer Technician the better
