you can run chkdsk from dos. If you are using windows, you would need to open a command prompt (usually located in the accessories folder) and then type chkdsk in the ensuing prompt. you can type chkdsk /? for commands that you can use with chkdsk.
Click start, and then click Run. In the box, type chkdsk. Then a black box (command prompt) will appear and check your disk.
When you are using chkdsk use parameters /f (fix) or /r (repair). For instance:
chkdsk c: /r

chkdsk /r Locates bad sectors and recovers readable information. chkdsk /f Fixes errors on the disk. The disk must be locked.
