If you are asking about current information you were working on in an application when the computer hung, there is no recovery.
If you are asking about information you had stored on the computer when it stopped booting; physically transfer the hard drive to a new or different computer. Boot this new computer. Your transferred hard drive should appear in the "My Computer" drive list. The infromation stored on it should be available unless the drive itself is bad.
If you are using Vista or newer operating system, the clock Gadget with the second hand showing is a good way to determine if the whole operating system is hung or if it is just the application you are using. If the second hand is still ticking, the operating system is still looping in the background and it is the application you are using that is hung.
