the fourragere is for the french legion of honor award
A Marine or Sailor can wear the french fourragere as long as he is in the 5th or 6th Marine regiment. Once he leaves, he can no longer wear it.
From USMC Uniform Regs, " The Fourragere will be worn over the left shoulder with the left arm passing through the large loop of the cord; the small loop will engage the button under the shoulder strap, except on the enlisted men's blue dress coat when it will engage the button above the strap, and the metal pencil attachment will hang naturally to the front."
Ive not been able to verify this but I have been told that you must do 3 combat pumps with the 5th or 6th to rate this permanently. would like to know if this is true... will have to fine the order stating this now.
That decoration is only allowed for those on duty with the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments. If you earned it, you wear it and if your unit won it, you wear it while serving in that unit.
the Croix de Guerre was award to the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) as a whole. there were NO volunteers involved. therefore, anyone assigned to the 504th PIR during and after the war was allowed to wear said award...........
The fourragère - a military award that distinguishes military units as a whole - is worn by the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments. They were awarded the fourragère for earning the Croix de Guerre with palm leaf three times during World War I. The fourragère was first adopted by France before the Netherlands, Portugal and Belgium followed.
