Swahili speakers in East Africa do say "furaha ya siku ya kuzaliwa" (happiness for the day of being born), but since this is somewhat cumbersome, they almost always and almost everywhere use the English "Happy birthday."

Since Swahili does not have a single word that means birthday, the English word is used and understood everywhere in East Africa (Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda).

Swahili-speakers in the former Belgian territories of Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi might not know the English word.
